The trailer for the new Sherlock Holmes film, directed by Guy Ritchie and due out at Christmas, looks, how shall I put this? Awesome.
Not only does it have the incomparable Robert Downey Jr. in it (he's one of the few actors I think I would swoon upon meeting), but it also has the incredible Jude Law, Mark Strong (why isn't he more famous?), and Eddie Marsan, whom you might remember from his intense performance in Happy-Go-Lucky.
Now, I'm a huge Holmes fan; like many, my favorite Holmes was Jeremy Brett. When I heard the guy who directed Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels was doing Sherlock Holmes, my first thought was, "Waaaa?" Then, I heard RDJ was in it, and I jumped onboard for the ride. This movie could suck, and I would still see it, just for him. It's just a good thing it doesn't appear as though it's going to suck.
A grittier, funnier, and tougher Holmes than we're used to seeing, I love the idea of showing him in a different light, and perhaps closer to the original Holmes that Conan Doyle wrote. Holmes was sharp and arrogant and sometimes downright mean in the novels, and he was a boxer, which a lot of people forget. He was also an opium fiend and probably a sociopath, but we love him all the same, and who could bring this all to life better than Downey Jr.?
Personally, I can't wait to see this movie. I hope it lives up to the hype.

By the way, we're planning on having high tea up at the Grand Hotel this weekend while we're on Mackinac Island! :) So cool that you know the Grand Hotel!
I have always wanted to visit (and stay) there! It looks just beautiful, and being the history freak that I am, it's on my list of places to see before I die;)
