Alexandra Koukinova Dolls . . .

Holy cow, do I have a doll artist to show you. I have always had a love of art dolls; from the time I was 9 or 10 years old, I used to save my alowance to buy dolls from Ashton Drake and Franklin Mint, but always adult dolls in historical clothing. Now, I love discovering artists creating dolls head and shoulders above what I used to love as a girl. One such as this is Alexandra Koukinova, a doll artist from Russia.

She obviously has a love for Art Deco, but her dolls encompass much more than just one style. She draws inspiration from ballet, Commedia dell'Arte, Fairy Tales, and numerous eras and historical figures. And each one is executed beautifully.

Check out more of Alexandra Koukinova's work; it is truly amazing, and has given me all sorts of costuning ideas . . .

Favorite Site Tuesdays: The Enchanted Doll

While I usually try to feature Etsy shops every Tuesday, once in a while I discover an artist whose work so moves and excites me that I have to introduce them to y'all. Marina Bychkova of The Enchanted Doll is just such an artist. I discovered her through my friends over at 666 Photography (another talented woman!), and I have not stopped looking at Marina's work since.

Marina's porcelain dolls start with hand-sculpted forms in super sculpy, and then she casts the porcelain pieces from there. Each doll is unique, hand-painted, and fully articulated with leather-lined joints to protect the movement of the porcelain. But, that's just the beginning of the beautiful artistry of these dolls.

The costumes. Oh my goodness, the costumes. These meticulously researched and heavily beaded and embroidered works of art are that much more incredible for being done on such a small scale. You never think about this unless you make dolls, but finding properly scaled patterns and prints in sometimes impossible. Many of the prints she makes herself.

It's no secret that I love dolls, and I have tried my hand at making them, but I bow to someone who does it so well. Even her nude dolls are incredibly elaborate, life-like creations.

She even handcrafts the headpieces, shoes, jewelry and accessories. If I were a rich girl, I'd own as many of her pieces as possible.

I highly recommend heading over to The Enchanted Doll. You will need to pick your chin up off your desk afterwards, but it is worth it;)

Etsy Week Feature: Matte Stephens

Sigmund Abernathy taking a ride through Central Park
On Thunderbolt On his first Trip to the United States

After that last post, I need to breathe and post some more fab art;)

My last feature today is the art of Matte Stephens. He has a wonderful mod sensibility that reminds me of the best of '50's and '60's art. It's a little Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends too, which I love;)

He also does little felted wool creations based on his art! You know I love me some felted wool;)

Rooster School Bus

It's a rooster you get to ride to school. C'mon, people; it doesn't get much cooler than this.

Stop by his delightful shop and pick something lovely and whimsical for your wall;)

Etsy Week Feature: Three Red Trees

Perry

My final dollmaking site (I have far too many of these that I love!) is Three Red Trees! Stacey Hsu specializes in sock dogs; fanciful stylized portraits of your dog made of, you guessed it, socks. However, she does adorable bears, bunnies and such in soft and hard-sculpt. I love the notecards as well, features illustrations and photos of her creations.

She will also do a custom sculpted portrait of your pet :

I love her sock creations best of all, however; my favorite experiences with dogs involve them exuberantly jumping up to lick my face, and these dogs remind me of my POV: big heads and noses on tiny bodies;)

Mathilde the Hot Dog

She supports the Humane Society of Kansas City as well, so not only will your purchase delight you, it will help care for animals at a wonderful no-kill shelter. Check out Three Red Trees and pick up a sock dog or a bunny or cat today!

Etsy Week Feature: Mealy Monster

Mealy Monster Russ

In case you hadn't noticed, I love odd-looking creatures. Mealy Monster feeds my fetish of so-ugly-they're-cute sculptures;) Nicole Johnson has a knack for capturing that tiny space between disturbing and adorable, and both her monsters and her people have a charm all their own.

Etsy Week Feature: Simply Plushed

See, Hear, Speak No Evil Birds

My next featured shop is Simply Plushed! I love little monsters and simple but well-designed plushies, and this shop fits the bill;) There are some sculpted pieces but most are little unique friends; these are not your cookie-cutter teddies:

Hemi Plush Mouse

Jo-Joo Plush Monster

I love the mod simplicity of these: they would look just as good on your shelf as they would sleeping with your toddler. Stop on by Simply Plushed and check them out; there are several pieces on sale, and most look like they are one of a kind, so get your little monster before someone else does;)

Jumpy the Squirrel

Etsy Week Feature: Paper Moon Gallery

The Queen of Cats

Today I'll be featuring all dollmakers; dollmaking is another passion of mine that I don't get to indulge very often, and I love looking at incredibly well-made art dolls at every chance I get! My first featured shop of the day is Paper Moon Gallery.

I heart wool felted figures, and the artist of Paper Moon has a sense of slightly morbid whimsey that I adore. These are not just portraits of somebody's dog in wool, the artist truly has a style all her own, a little bit Mary Englebright by way of Tim Burton:

Little Zombie Girl

BFF's Zombie and the Fly

She also does animals that are cute in that slightly off way that I find so fabulous . . .

The Black Balloon

Just Dance

Stop by Paper Moon Gallery and check out her cute creations; I've never seen a zombie or a little demon I wanted to cuddle with more!
