In the (cell phone) weeds . . .

I'm trying to pick a new cell phone and carrier, and right now I'm looking primarily at two phones, each on different carriers and plans:
-The Droid with a Verizon plan
-The MyTouch 3G with a T-Mobile plan

There seem to be pros and cons with each company, and with each phone, from what I've read and what I'm hearing from friends. The Droid is the new, sexy phone from Motorola, and it does seem to have a lot of features, but that makes the plan relatively expensive per month (not to mention the price-tag of the phone itself!), and because of its newness there are very few reviews that can speak to its long-term performance.

The MyTouch 3G is less expensive and I like the price of the monthly plan better, but T-Mobile has less coverage than Verizon, and there are complaints about the performance of the keyboard on the touch-screen (there is no physical QWERTY keyboard on the MyTouch).

This is the phone I plan to take with me to California and hope to have for several years, so I don't want to skimp on quality or service, but I do want to keep my monthly bill under $100 a month, if possible. So, I'm throwing it out to you, dear readers. Does anybody have any experience with these phones or carriers, and can give me some advice?

Ann Taylor Loft Lounge . . .

It's no secret I love Ann Taylor Loft, and I have a new covet: their Lounge collection.

Only Ann Taylor could do lounge so elegantly, and everything is under $100.

This is just a step up from Old Navy, and I love, love, love it.

Rockin' the Booties . . .

I am all about the fall trend of booties that hit at or just above the ankle. Paired with tights, capri leggings, or skinny jeans, they are too cute for words. Right now, I'm wearing my new Whitney Cuff Boots from Payless; you gotta love a suede boot for under $40;) Now, I just need an oversized plaid tunic . . .

Favorite Product Thursdays!

Today's favorite product is great for two reasons:
1. It delivers on its promise
2. It's cheap
I am always one to say that you get what you pay for when it comes to makeup: if you buy a $2.99 lipstick from Wet-n-Wild, what you're going to get is a waxy, messy, clumpy tube of nastiness. Whereas if you spend $24.00 for a Dior lipstick, you get a little piece of heaven for your lips. Still, I can't afford to spend $24.00 every time I want to put some color on my lips, so I was ecstatic to find this gloss.
Revlon Colorstay Mineral Lipglaze is only $10 and really does what it says it will do, which I have found to be the case with the entire Colorstay line. I already wear their eyeshadow, liquid liner, and lip liner, and now I am officially jumping on the lipglaze bandwagon. Not messy or goopy (as so many glosses seem to be), it goes on smoothly, has nice color coverage, and sticks around for hours without cracking or flaking (a staple with other long-wear lipcolors). I have two so far, in Unlimited Nectar (a peachy-taupe color), and Forever Fig (a taupe-brown), and I think I'll try to pick up a few more to throw in my purse.
The best part? You don't have to go to Macy's or Nordstrom to pick it up! Run over to Walgreens and try one today; you won't be disappointed;)

Favorite Product Thursdays!

Black Cage Gladiator Sandal

Today's favorite product comes from Torrid, a sister store to Hot Topic that sells fashions and products for plus-size girls. I've been seeing the gladiator sandal everywhere this season, and started looking for the right pair at least two months ago. Every pair had something wrong with them; I am very picky! Finally, I found these on Torrid.com and fell in love.

They are pretty fabulous, and the best feature is the extra-wide calf. Most average women do not have the bird-legs that boots and shoes of this nature require; I usually need to stuff my legs into boots and pray that the zipper will hold as it cuts off my circulation, and I am nowhere in the minority there. But, these sandals have a super-cute up-the-calf style that has a lot of extra space in the buckles; I actually had to adjust them to the smallest hole to get them to fit correctly! Plus, they zip up the back, so there's no need to fiddle with multiple buckles every time you put them on.

Surf on over and check them out, before they are gone!

Favorite Product Thursdays!

This week's favorite product comes from Ann Taylor Loft, one of my very favorite stores; I am lucky enough (or unlucky enough) to have one in the first floor of the building I work in, and most of my work wardrobe includes Ann Taylor pieces. This recommendation, however, is for their jeans, which I had never tried until last weekend.

As a curvy girl, I have the perpetual problem of finding jeans that will fit correctly; I usually go for low-rise, so I can fit my hips and not worry about my waist being disproportionately small (there is a ten inch difference in my hip-to-waist ratio). Even with low-rise, however, I still have problems, as most women do; my usual jeans staple is Old Navy Diva jeans, but their sizing is so inconsistent that I am anywhere from an 8 to a 12, all in the same style!

So, imagine my delight when Loft had a denim sale last week and I decided to give their jeans a try; on the pricier side, I had never considered them before, but the $19.99 sale price was a definite incentive. I grabbed a pair of Modern Boot Cuts in a 10 (!) and jaunted over to the dressing room, prepared to be disappointed yet again.

Let me just say, these are the softest, most flattering, most comfortable jeans I have ever worn. The denim feels lived-in without being worn-looking, and the fit was perfect; my ass actually looked pretty good! There were no gaps or sags at the waist, but neither was it too tight through the thighs. All around, pretty fabulous.

I'll have to try to get Loft denim from now on, I guess; it's hard to go back to prepackaged cheese slices when you've had a taste of perfectly aged asiago on your sandwich, after all;)

*Note: You will have to stop in your nearest Loft store for the denim collection; there is very little online! White jeans? Shiver.

Adventures in Hot Wax . . .

Yep; you read that right. I got a bikini wax yesterday.

First time ever, and I have to say, it was a pretty positive experience, and not at all what I thought it would be. I have to give a major shout-out to the girls over at Trim, the Bucktown/Wicker Park salon I went to. They only do waxing, as opposed to a salon that cuts and styles hair and has their waxing hidden in the back, like the bastard child nobody talks about. Waxing really is one of these things that most women have some interest in, or at least curiosity about, but that no one feels comfortable discussing. When telling my sister or my mother about the experience, even I had some trouble figuring out good words to use to describe what was going on, without either sounding like a high school health movie, or a porn film. There was certainly nothing pornographic about the experience, nor was it clinical. It was actually pretty neat.

The salon, to start with, is adorable. Done all in red, black, and white, with traces of chrome thrown in, it is modern but also vintage; the walls are covered in tasteful but slightly naughty Vargas girls and black-and-white glamour shots from the '40's-'60's. The waxing rooms have pocket doors painted red, as you see here:

This, of course, cuts down on the ability to inadvertantly see inside the rooms, which any girl has to be grateful for, but it is a little detail that might easily have been overlooked. Not by the Trim crew, however; every detail, even the bathroom with bowl-sink and expensive faucet fixture, was impressive, artfully done, and designed to make you feel comfortable.

The Reception area was cuter than this; this is obviously on older picture. There is an extensive little retail section where they sell sexy little panties and lots of products for skincare post-waxing. I wanted to steal the little couch too: it was upholstered in a red poppy floral and piled with mod pillows;)

Here's the row of private waxing rooms. Each one has a little cushy table (a helluva lot nicer than the one you find in most doctor's offices, though just as clean), waxing station, and more black-and-white glamour and art photography for inspiration. Looking at Joan Crawford glaring down from the wall is enough to steel any girl's nerve for what is about to occur, as though she's arching her sharp-enough-to-cut-paper brow and growling, "Man-up, baby."
My technician was the incomparable Fiona; she was petite and soft-spoken, and very professional while still friendly enough to put me slightly as ease (remember, I was pretty nervous coming in!). I shucked my pants and prepared for her to come in, and then she got to work. She advised me to be as relaxed as possible, as it would make it less painful, and we got started.
I won't go into graphic detail, of course. A few things I do want to mention, though: when you go to someone who knows what they're doing, it does not hurt nearly as much as you think it will. Yes, it hurts. But, the strips were pulled off quicker than a band-aid, and the pain was gone that fast. I chattered the entire time, trying to distract myself, and ended up with a Brazilian; she was talking to me, and removed an extra strip! She mentioned it then, and I decided that was perfectly fine with me; I even made my follow-up for the same treatment next time!
I know there is sometimes a feeling that the only women who go for bikini waxes are pampered princesses or super models, and that it is an unnecessary luxury. It is not exactly inexpensive, but when you consider how much many women spend on their children, their dogs, or their significant others without batting an eyelash, why should it be considered such a luxury to spend a little on ourselves? I think we live in a society where we are incouraged to treat ourselves very cheaply, that it is almost a desirable trait to practice regular self-denial. I, for one, am glad I decided to try this; after I got home and looked in the mirror, I felt sexy and empowered, and that is something I certainly don't feel very often.
That is worth any price; it was certainly worth what I paid for it! If you're considering taking the plunge, I say: go for it. And, if you're in the Chicago area, go to Trim to get it done; you'll be glad you did;)

Favorite Product Thursdays!

Today's favorite product is something that's been kicking my butt for a little while now: Jillian Michael's 30-Day Shred DVD. Jillian Michaels, as some of you may already know, is one of the trainers on the television show Biggest Loser. When I started my life-style shift in January, I started researching the most effective workouts to get maximum results in the shortest time. Result? There is no silver bullet, of course. But, this workout is pretty darn close!

Whether you are hopelessly out-of-shape, regularly active, or hardcore, this workout will whip your butt. There are three levels (beginning, medium, and intense), and each workout is about 20-minutes long, in Jillian's 3-2-1 interval pattern. Basically, Jillian believes that the combination of 3 minutes of strength followed by 2 minutes of cardio and 1 minute of abs is the secret to getting results. Most specialists agree that interval training is the most efficient way to get in shape, and let me tell you, this workout certainly feels like it's working! The only equipment you need? A mat and hand weights. Easy-peasy.

I haven't been able to use this everyday for 30 days; I combine this with my running program, elliptical, pilates, and weights, spacing them out and changing them up so my body never gets complacent. This DVD gets my heart going and I sweat like nobody's business, and just when I want to stop, she hits me with no sympathy and makes me keep pushing. She is not overly-nice in this DVD; if you've ever watched the show, you'll know she can be a little bitchy, but that is just what I need to motivate me to keep going.

This is a hard workout, but you feel like you've accomplished something when you're done. If you're serious about getting in shape and getting healthy, I highly recommend forking up the $12 to get this. See a clip here.

My new favorite . . .

Some of you (I'm talking to you, Tabitha) have had to listen to me moan and complain for the last several months because my favorite mascara was being discontinued, and I didn't know which one to try next. I tried Loreal and Neutrogena and Almay, and each one ended up giving me spidery, clumpy eyelashes that bled under my eyes and made me look tired and unwell by the end of the day. I tossed no fewer than four mascaras in my search for the perfect one. While this may not compare with, say, the pursuit of a cure for cancer, it is still an important issue to a lot of humans of the female gender, and certainly caused me a minor headache;)

Finally, though it cost me more than I wanted to spend on a single tube of makeup, I found the winner: Diorshow Iconic Mascara. After reading reviews and seeing it recommended on other blogs, I bit the bullet and walked over to Macy's on my lunch hour last week to plunk down $30 and pick this up. With trepidation I applied it the next day, and, huzzah! No clumping, no spider-eyes, no smearing and bleeding under my eyes, and it highlights my lashes rather nicely. I'm not normally one to spend so much on one tiny thing (says the girl who once spent $300 for a yard and a half of fabric!), but in this case, you get what you pay for!

Two thimble-covered thumbs up!
